Mare Magnum Nostrum is a project of Gea Casolaro, curated by Leonardo Regano, winner
of the 8th Edition of Italian Council, program to promote Italian contemporary art
in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian
Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
Presented by the Regional Directorate of Museums of Emilia-Romagna, in 2021 Mare
Magnum Nostrum will become part of the permanent collection of the National Museum
of Ravenna.
Mare Magnum Nostrum is a participatory art project that spans the various countries
of the Mediterranean, relying on the collaboration of institutions, associations,
and above all the public, who will send their photos of daily life unfolding on the
shores of our sea, taken in any country, location, time and season. These photos
will show some small piece of the Mediterranean Sea, photos of parties, photos of
departures, photos of tragedies, photos of protest, photos of all kinds and times.
Uploaded directly to the site by the public, the photos will help create a plurality
of points of view on our shared sea.
The work is composed of an immersive walkable scenery representing the Mediterranean
basin, which will entirely cover the walls of the space. Some of the photos uploaded
by users will be included in the installation, in the area corresponding to the
place where they were taken, becoming an integral part of the work that will grow
stage by stage, gathering more and more images. Day after day, a rhizomatic
cartography will develop, made of life stories that intertwine on this sea that has
always been a source of exchanges of civilizations, a true common basin that we
share and that unites us, abolishing the usual opposing point of view "we on this
shore and them on the other". The installation places the viewer in the middle of
the water, to really see the Mediterranean "like this huge lake that stretches from
Gibraltar to the Dardanelles, and from Tunis to Venice": not a frontier between
peoples, but on the contrary, a universe that includes us.
